The frame gets the attention, but the glass does most of the work — privacy, warmth, quiet and safety all come down to what’s in the sealed unit. Here’s a plain-English run through the main choices for UK homes.

Obscure & patterned glass

Obscure (or “privacy”) glass is textured or frosted so it lets light through while blurring the view — ideal for bathrooms, en-suites, ground-floor windows and front doors. In the UK, obscure glass is graded on a privacy scale from 1 to 5, where 5 gives the most privacy. Patterned glass takes the same idea further with decorative textures and designs, from subtle ripples to bold period patterns that suit older homes.

Because obscure and patterned glass is a per-pane choice, you can mix it through the house — privacy glass in the bathroom, clear elsewhere. It’s easy to specify at quote stage, and you can get glass options priced so you know the cost of each upgrade before you decide.

Double, triple and energy-efficient glazing

Most replacement windows come with double glazing as standard: two panes with a gap filled by an inert gas such as argon, and a near-invisible low-emissivity (low-E) coating that reflects warmth back into the room. Triple glazing adds a third pane for even better insulation and noise reduction, and can be worth it in exposed or very cold locations. According to the Energy Saving Trust, upgrading from old single glazing to modern A-rated units can typically cut a noticeable share of the heat lost through windows, though your actual saving depends on the home.

Look for the Window Energy Rating (WER) band — A++ to G — and the U-value, where a lower number means less heat escaping. Your installer can talk you through the numbers at survey.

Acoustic, safety and solar-control glass

• Acoustic glass uses a laminated interlayer to dampen noise — a favourite on main roads, flight paths and busy town-centre flats.
• Toughened & laminated safety glass is required by regulations in certain positions, such as low-level glazing, doors and large panes. Laminated glass also improves security because it holds together when struck.
• Solar-control glass has a coating that reduces heat gain from strong sun — useful behind big south-facing picture windows and in conservatories.
• Self-cleaning glass has a coating that breaks down dirt in daylight and rinses cleaner in the rain.
